The Republican presidential nominee was seen dozing off during the recitation of a Sikh prayer called “ardaas” by Harmeet Dhillon, a Republican lawmaker from California.
Dhillon’s participation to appease voters from marginalized communities comes just weeks after the GOP embraced efforts from the Heritage Foundation that designed a blueprint—Project 2025— that calls for Christian Nationalist America under a second Trump presidency.
Granite Post multimedia reporter Mrinali Dhembla, who was raised Sikh, spoke with her grandfather to get his views on how he thinks his faith, Sikhism is being used to peddle extreme right wing politics in America.
“It was disrespectful and ignorant,” Dhembla’s grandfather, a practicing Sikh said. Anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, abortion bans, corporate greed are all against the tenets of Sikhism, he said, adding that his faith believes in a “classless” society.
