Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made a big swing through New Hampshire this week, making a trio of stops across the state in her new role as the co-chair of the Kamala Harris campaign for president.

The visit provided a new layer of enthusiasm for Democrats in the state, which has seen an explosive ascent of Democratic engagement since President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race on Sunday and endorsed Harris to run as the nominee instead.

During a stop at Pappy’s Pizza in Manchester, Whitmer said the enthusiasm she was seeing in New Hampshire was matching what she was seeing in her native Michigan.

“There’s so much energy all across New Hampshire, just like what I’m seeing in Michigan. It’s really exciting. I think we are getting inundated by people who want to volunteer, and the fundraising is going great. I mean, I don’t think we can slow down for a second or take any one or any vote for granted,” Whitmer said.

Attendees at the events said Whitmer was the perfect guest at the perfect moment.

“It’s like a geyser of energy that’s just like broken the surface. It’s a joyful energy,” said State Senator Debra Altschiller after meeting the governor in Manchester. “It was really interesting to have Gretchen Whitmer as the first surrogate come to the state. Because if the idea was to show that Kamala Harris stands among badass, steel spined women, you couldn’t have picked a better surrogate.”

At a reproductive rights roundtable in Nashua, Whitmer weighed in on the risks of a second Donald Trump administration and the Project 2025 agenda his allies are planning on implementing should he be elected.

“We also know that this is a man who will cruelly use the powers of the executive office in any way that benefits himself if he is given those powers again,” Whitmer said. “The [Project] 2025 agenda is replete with examples of how they want to abuse government, to hurt the people of this country. I think it’s a really scary, dangerous moment.”
