Big news for hoops fans—Boston might finally be getting a WNBA team.
The Boston Globe reported that Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca is leading a group that’s agreed to buy the Connecticut Sun for a record-breaking $325 million—the most ever paid for a women’s sports franchise. For comparison, the previous high was last year’s $250 million deal for the women’s soccer team, Angel City FC, led by Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife, journalist Willow Bay.
If the sale is finalized, the Sun would relocate to TD Garden in 2027 and get a brand-new $100 million practice facility in Boston. The Sun’s early season games would be played in Providence to avoid clashing with the Celtics’ schedule.
It’s not a done deal yet—the league still need to sign off—but Boston’s looking closer than ever to landing a team.
