After community power programs offering cheaper electric rates than major utilities launched last year, Seacoast communities are now competing to see who can support the most clean energy.

Households in Durham, Dover, Newmarket, Exeter, and Portsmouth are being challenged to opt for slightly higher electric rates, indicating more share in renewable energy. These municipalities are a part of the Community Power Coalition of New Hampshire.

About 94% of the coalition’s customers use a “basic” rate, which represents 24.3% renewable energy. The coalition also offers rates that represent 33%, 50% and 100% renewable content.

According to reporting from NHPR, a higher share in renewable energy would increase overall investments in renewable projects.
