Hey Upper Valley is a website and social media account covering events, restaurants, and hidden gems of the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire. It’s a one-man operation started by a person who just really loves the area. We caught up with the guy behind the account. Here’s our Q&A.
What’s your name? Gordon Boddington
When and how did you start @heyuppervalley? Around 2019, I was working in tourism and discovered that it was hard
for my employees to make restaurant recommendations because there was very little online about the Upper Valley. I have almost 20 years of experience in community and economic development. I wanted to develop something that would make it easy for visitors to our area to discover the locations and small businesses that make our region special. I started by encouraging people to post photos of things they love about the area with the hashtag #HeyUpperValley. The community grew, and there are now over 10,000 photos highlighting cool Upper Valley things on instagram.
Why does the Upper Valley need its own social media account?
I’m not sure anyone needs social media. I have significant experience using social media to build real-life community and connections. I focus on promoting events and activities that build real-life connections while also helping to enhance our creative economy. Before
posting, I always ask myself what value the post provides, and if it isn’t positive, I don’t post it. I love supporting the local
entrepreneurs and non-profits that make our community more vibrant. The most common feedback I receive about the account is that someone discovered something they wouldn’t have otherwise, which makes me proud because that’s the goal.
What’s the best thing about the Upper Valley?
I love that I can visit a waterfall, support a new chef, and see a world-class piece of art or theatre, all on the same day. When I need city time, it is easy to get to Boston, NYC, or Montreal.
What’s the best hidden gem in the Upper Valley?
My favorite hidden gem changes frequently. Sometimes, I say Old City Falls in Stafford, VT, or Pine Park in Hanover, NH. The Lebanon
Artways Tunnel is also great.
What’s a fun fact about yourself?
I grew up in a converted maple sugar shack in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. When traveling, I will bring mini bottles of maple
syrup to try and bribe the front desk for a free upgrade. I also never take selfies, except this one (above).
